Your goodness becomes strength in your greatest difficulties
A kind reply when you were tired. A few words of tefillah when your heart felt heavy. That moment when you put something aside because you wanted to come closer to Hashem.
You may hardly remember those moments now.
Hashem wanted that closeness with you. Rebbe Nachman explains that Hashem is full of compassion and deeply desires your avodah, your personal service of Hashem. Even when a person feels very far away, a movement toward Hashem is immensely precious.
The moments when you reached toward Hashem are precious, even while you are still struggling.
Rebbe Nachman reveals something beautiful about them: every movement we make away from what holds us back and toward serving Hashem gathers together with the others. All those precious efforts become connected, supporting us through our greatest difficulties.
Your moments of closeness with Hashem become a tremendous source of strength and support in your times of greatest difficulty.
Think of the fine strands that make up a rope. Each strand can seem so slight on its own. Woven together, they can hold a weight that one strand could never carry.
This gives us a way to picture Rebbe Nachman’s teaching. In our memory, those moments may seem scattered across the years. A prayer here. An act of chesed there. A choice nobody else noticed. Before Hashem, these movements toward closeness become connected, like the strands of that rope.
There is such love in this. Hashem gives your efforts a significance that reaches far beyond the moment when you made them. Even a prayer you said through tears years ago belongs to this extraordinary spiritual strength.
You come into this moment with a whole history of goodness.
The tzedakah you gave, the Torah you learned when it took effort, the compassion you chose to show: there have been so many moments when you turned toward Hashem. Some were difficult. Some were almost unnoticed, even by you.
Remember one of those moments now. Something real and specific, even if it happened years ago.
Think of what Rebbe Nachman is revealing about that very moment: something you may have dismissed as insignificant belongs to the tremendous goodness that strengthens you through your hardest times!
“Hashem cherishes my efforts. Every precious moment when I turned toward Hashem joins together with the others, becoming a tremendous source of strength and support for me in my times of greatest difficulty.”
Bring that awareness into the next prayer you say or act of chesed you do. Hashem deeply desires this closeness with you. The words you say and the goodness you express have an extraordinary significance that reaches far beyond this moment.
There is so much more goodness accompanying you than you remember. Hashem cherishes every movement you make toward Hashem!
